独立，是与依赖、依附相反的状态。
意识形态领域：
一个独立的人、生物、行為，指其有独立的思想、独立的人格、有獨自生活的條件及自由意志。未必指該人能自給自足，而是它的行為與抉擇基本上不受他方影響。
一个独立国家或組織，指其统治和管理的权力由该国家或組織的人，基本上不受他方影響。
產業领域：
獨立製作，指不受財團、股東、唯利是圖的投資者等商業化的影響，由專業或業餘的創作者（或不干預創作者的投資者）自行集資、製作、發行，作品自由獨立的民營產業。例如：獨立電影、獨立音樂、独立博客、獨立遊戲、獨立書籍、獨立戲劇、獨立節目、獨立隊伍等等。
